My Students Meet Sherlock

Just a fun little side note:

My advisory class is now Sherlocked.

I introduced them to the show today. We’re watching an episode every week until school lets out. As per usual, at the beginning, they weren’t that interested, but as they got to meet different characters and saw the interactions between said characters, their attitudes changed. I think most of them actually shut up and watched by the end of the period.

Some hilarious comments, and my countercomments:
• “Holy CRAP he talks fast!” “And you guys thought I was bad?!”
• “How did he DO that?!” “Juuuuuuuuuuust watch…Ok, here it comes!”
• “Seriously…he needs to take a breath.” “Funny story:…[I shared the fun internet interview pics re: Mark Gatiss putting “Sorry Benedict” in brackets at the beginning of a scene in the script]”
• “He’s so MEAN/FUNNY/RUDE/Why would he say that to Molly?”
• (The dismissal bell rings) “AAAWWWWWW!!!” “Don’t worry. I timed it so we see one episode a week.”
• (As students exit) “I’m totally watching this on Netflix on my way home after school.” “Why does she always make us watch British stuff?” (The last one was clearly not me, but definitely made by a freshman who hasn’t been exposed to my full-on adoration of England. They’ll figure it out soon enough…)

Teacher-Of-The-Day winner: THIS GIRL. Yup. I rock. If I can get a bunch of indifferent 14- and 15-year-olds to watch BBC drama, I can do anything. Bring it on, world.

Actually, it’s not that tough, is it? It is a REALLY good show. But I am showing my age…these 14- and 15-year-olds have NO idea who Khan, Smaug OR Bilbo are. I’m saddened by this. I told them to get out more. Says the fangirl who lives for the movies.

At least they didn’t hate it. That happens on occasion.
